Another year, another successful Moyamoya awareness event! Professor Marcus Stoodley was a Special Guest Speaker at the annual Aussie Locums Blue Tie Gala Ball, a fundraiser for Moyamoya Australia, on Saturday 6th May 2023. A large audience gathered at the Pullman Reef Casino in Cairns to raise awareness and understanding of those affected by Moyamoya Disease, bring attention on World Moyamoya Day on May 6th, and share patients stories with the community.
Moyamoya disease is a rare blood vessel disorder in the brain in which the carotid artery becomes blocked in the basal ganglia area of the brain, reducing blood flow to the brain. As a result, tiny blood vessels form at the base of the brain to compensate the lack of blood flow and to supply blood to the brain. The word originates from Japan meaning “puff of smoke” and describes the appearance of these tiny vessels.
Macquarie Neurosurgery & Spine is committed to encourage and provide continuous support for patients and their families. This year again, we are proud to partner with Moyamoya Australia who have kindly donated $10,000 to the Macquarie University Neurosciences research fund to allow further research on this rare disease.
If you would like to help make a difference in the life of Moyamoya patients – Donate to Moyamoya Australia. Every bit of support counts!
