csf disorders
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is produced in the choroid plexus and flows around the brain and the spinal cord.
Everyone has CSF and we produce about 500mL daily, though our brain can only contain about 120-150mL.
The body drains CSF into the bloodstream, and the CSF is recycled approximately three times each day.
What is the purpose of CSF?
CSF helps to protect the brain by cushioning it within the skull case and acts as a shock absorber for the central nervous system.
It also circulates chemicals and nutrients from the blood and removes the brain’s waste products.
csf conditions
CSF Leaks
A CSF leak is a serious issue that can cause debilitating headaches, characteristically worse with standing and improved with lying down.
Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus means “water on the brain”. A build-up of CSF can cause headache and impaired brain function.
Benign Intracranial Hypertension
Neurological condition characterized by increased pressure inside the skull without the presence of a brain tumour.
Syringomyelia
Syringomyelia is a condition in which a fluid-filled cyst (syrinx) forms inside the spinal cord, often in association with Chiari malformation. Other causes of syringomyelia include tumours and spinal cord injury.
