Professor Antonio Di Ieva

MD, PhD, FRACS
Professor Antonio Di leva

Professor Antonio Di Ieva is an internationally trained Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon.

He has experience in the treatment of a broad range of neurosurgical conditions and a special interest in neuro-oncology, pituitary, and skull base surgery, microneurosurgery and neuroendoscopy (“keyhole” neurosurgery), pain treatment (including spine surgery and neuromodulation), neurotraumatology, peripheral nerve surgery, and hydrocephalus.

Medical Degree in 2002

Prof Di Ieva received his Medical Degree in 2002 and completed his specialisation in Neurosurgery at the University of Brescia, Italy, in 2007, and became a Consultant Neurosurgeon in Milan (2007-2010).

In 2010, Prof Di Ieva relocated to Vienna and completed a Ph.D. in Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Vienna. During his time in Austria, he was appointed Associate Professor of Neuroanatomy and received numerous invitations to teach neurosurgery, neurotraumatology, and neuroanatomy in several countries.

He then continued with extensive specialist training and in 2014 completed a three-year Clinical & Research Fellowship in Skull Base surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, where on top of brain tumour specialisation, he also performed Gamma Knife radiosurgery and emergency neurosurgery in one of the largest trauma centres of Canada.

Clinical & Research Fellowship

In 2015 Prof Di Ieva moved to Sydney performing general neurosurgery and complex spine surgery at Macquarie University Hospital, Royal North Shore and North Shore Private Hospitals, and Sydney Adventist Hospital (The SAN). He became a Fellow with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 2017.

Prof Di Ieva is devoted to advancing neurosurgery with his primary research interests in neuro-oncology, neuroanatomy, neuroimaging, and computational neurosciences, with a focus on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the neurosciences. Indeed, in 2019 he founded the Computational NeuroSurgery (CNS) Lab at Macquarie University, the first of its kind of the World, aimed to study neurosurgical diseases by means of AI.

advancing neurosurgery

Prof Di Ieva is a World leader in neuro-oncology research with over 130 peer-reviewed publications and 3 textbooks (including the Handbook of Skull Base Surgery, Thieme, New York), awarded international neurosurgical research awards, including the 2019 John Mitchell Crouch Fellowship, the most prestigious research award of the RACS, as well as a prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowship, for a total of >$5.5M in research grants as lead investigator from NHMRC, RACS, and ARC only in the 2018-2022 period.

At Macquarie University Hospital, Professor Di Ieva is the chair of the Neuro-oncology Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) as well as of the Pituitary MDT. Moreover, at Macquarie Neurosurgery / MQ Health he leads the Pain Neuromodulation clinic (co-founded by him in 2020) and the Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumour Clinic.
